Over the last few years, I’ve worked with a number of founders who were either preparing to sell their companies or had been approached by potential buyers. Many shared the same question: How do I make sure I’m selling to the right people?

It’s a question I understand well. I’ve built a business from nothing, grown it, faced challenges, made mistakes, and eventually sold it. When that time came, we had three companies interested in buying us, and choosing the right one wasn’t easy. That experience taught me more than any book or business course ever could.

One of the biggest risks to any business isn’t the market or competition. It’s the people you decide to trust, the partner you join forces with, or the buyer you hand your company over to.

The Hidden Dangers of the Wrong Partnership

The wrong partner can do more harm to your business than a bad year or a lost client. They might look ideal on paper, bringing money, contacts, or experience but when the honeymoon period ends and the pressure mounts, their true nature emerges.

I’ve seen partnerships unravel slowly: small disagreements turn into major conflicts, priorities drift, and soon both sides are pulling in different directions. By the time the damage is visible, it’s often too late. One founder I know described the aftermath as a “scorched earth situation” and that’s exactly what I saw when I saw him trying to rebuild a new company afterwards.

Before you take that leap, pause and ask yourself:

  • Does this potential partner or buyer truly share your vision?
  • Will they still fight for your business once they own it?
  • Do your values genuinely align, or are you simply being dazzled by what they offer?

The Right Buyer Can Transform Your Business

Selling your company can feel like the ultimate reward for years of effort. I’ve been there. The temptation to take the highest offer is strong but the biggest cheque is not always the best deal.

Some buyers don’t want to grow what you’ve built; they just don’t want anyone else to have it. Their goal is to remove you from the market, not to nurture your success.

Others see your business as a small acquisition that must be reshaped to fit their model, stripping away the culture, team, and identity that made it thrive.

Before signing anything, ask yourself:

  • Will this buyer respect what I’ve built and invest in its future?
  • Will my team be valued or treated as expendable?
  • Is this about growth or about controlling competition?
  • Are they interested in our potential, or just our assets?

Sometimes a slightly lower offer from a buyer who understands your business, respects your culture, and values your people is worth far more in the long run.

Think Long-Term, Even When You’re Ready to Move On

Bad partnerships and bad sales happen when founders focus only on short-term wins. It’s natural, the energy of a big deal is hard to resist. But the decisions you make now will shape your business’s future and your personal legacy.

Take the time to ask the difficult questions. Look beyond the headlines. Make sure the people you trust are truly the right ones for the journey. Because in business, strong companies rarely fail because of the competition, they fail because they chose the wrong partner or buyer.
